Hello Everyone,

Quite often, Steve and I are asked to help parents put together competitive opportunities for young players who really enjoy golf.  We are advocates of having young folks compete – however, there are appropriate levels as a player is developing.  Too much, too early can overwhelm a player; too little, too late can leave them far behind when high school try-outs begin. We are also mindful of the costs involved: travel, days off for driving, and entry fees can present a challenge.  The good news is that there are plenty of opportunities for a player to develop locally before making any major investments, and then there is balance – Steve and I are big advocates of multi-sport cross training, learning to drive and ample family time.

When a child should begin competing is really dependent upon the players exposure to the game.  Programs like League and a Lesson and Skills Camp are good avenues into the flow and etiquette of the game.  The Parent/Child events hosted by the Bobbie Barnett Foundation are fun for all players, but are also a good place to start for those who a bit raw on the rules.  Team events tend to be less intimidating than stroke play events for middle school and jv players.  By the time a player signs up for a stroke play event, he or she should have a fairly decent command of the basic rules and etiquette.

Below is an easy to follow list of summer events in our area.  Let’s all get out and enjoy the game!
